Hand Written Sometimes I get caught off guard. While leafing through my recipe collection I came across a few hand written favorites by family members who are now gone. Suddenly, they feel near and I remember those occasions when we ate that dish or dessert together. These are gifts. What happens when we no longer manually write recipes, letters, or anything for that matter? My son recently got married and I asked my friends to give them a favorite family recipe. Now, they have a budding collection from loved ones and fortunately, they are all hand written.
Hiking in Ireland, May 2016
For 10 days Nancy hiked across Ireland with her husband and some good friends. They saw ancient sites, traversed beautiful valleys and hills, heard great music, and enjoyed a pint or two. Although she had been to England and Scotland several times--having lived in each country briefly--Ireland was a place unto its own with a mysterious spirit aligned with its modern way of life. Usually when travelling across the expansive hills, sheep would run away to get distance from intruders. This lamb chased Nancy down and insisted on being held.
Life with Animals
Nancy has lived with an animal menagerie for thirty years. She and her husband acquired a Bolivian Red-footed tortoise in 1985 when they lived in Connecticut. Sebastian (named after the British distance runner, Sebastian Coe) moved with them across the country to California where he has lived since 1989. Other creatures in the Servis household include the elegant and tender-hearted Weimaraner named Shasta who, if truth be told, has always been a little unnerved by the curious tortoise.
